Nursery owls in progress
July 19, 2009
I spent last night stitching wings, eyes and belly buttons on the owl family for the twins nursery. The larger white owls are actually socks inside out to give them a slight downy appearance. It was a bit of an experiment – I’ve always used socks the right way out but it worked a treat. The textured effect just makes you want to stroke them. Each of the owl bodies is nowcomplete except for one. I’m basing the whole colour scheme on the little stripey owls so browns, aqua and grey colours are picked out in the fabrics and socks. The last owl I’d like to be in that dusty olive colour but finding an exact match is quite tricky. The search continues!

Plaid sock pup
July 15, 2009
I didn’t get a chance to post photos of this little guy before Mathildas. He’s one of my favourite colour combinations with old school plaid socks and Heather Ross Lightning bugs “Campervan” fabric under his ears. Oh how I love these socks. I’m madly trying to source a whole lot more for sock pup kits at Stitches and Craft.
Sorry about the quality of the photo. We’re house sitting at the moment and my good Nikon camera is outa juice and the charger is missing. Chaos. As usual.
Owls for a Nursery
July 13, 2009
A little while back a lovely lady from the states contacted me about creating a mobile and series of owls for her sister, who is expecting twins. As we emailed back and forth they decided to decorate the entire Nursery around the colour and theme of the owls. To say I am flattered is such an understatement. So this week I’m stitching owls for the nursery. The mobile is based on the original owl mobile that I created although for this one I’ve found some beautiful driftwood on a beach to use for the hanging support. To go with them I’m thinking of a pair of downy white owls with little grey faces and a few tawny brown owls to bring out some of the other colours in the original striped socks. The fabric for their wings will be woollen felt with Letterhead (by Aunty Cookie) hand printed linen and a soft aqua linen that I used for my litle boy, Oscar’s cradle quilt. I’m also hoping to get more of the dot fabric.

There’s nothing more beautiful than working on a room for brand new little people. I feel honoured. Will post more progress shots as the week goes on.

Little sock monster
July 8, 2009
My little boy is 20 months old. He is more entertaining, gorgeous and cheekier every day. As we approach the infamous twos he is truly turning into a little monster. So this sock softie was inspired by him. He has a round little belly, chubby little butt cheeks and is captured with a full ratbag scream. Just like Oscar.
Softies and The Craft Room
June 29, 2009
I spent all Sunday stitching with the lovely ladies of The Craft Room (Thanks to the ultimate retro mummy for organising!) It was perfect timing for finishing off the Mathildas Market sock toy gang, here they are all in blues. I love that each one of them turns out to be slightly different, it’s almost like they have different personalities. Still lots more stitching to do for next weekend… I have to admit there was an awful lot of talking and not quite enough stitching going on. It’s so great to meet crafty bloggers in person although quite weird to recognise people more by their blog name than their first name or even face.
G-raf for sure
June 14, 2009
I braved the spotlight stocktake sale today. I must be insane. I wouldn’t have gone at all but this Giraffe needs a mane and I haven’t been able to find the right lilac grossgrain anywhere nearby.
.
So what’s with the title? Well you may have noticed that I don’t name the sock softies. Woof Woof was a name Oscar, my little boy, gave to the first ever sock dog I made. Toot was the first thing Karen’s (and-so-i-sew) daughter said when she saw spotted him in the snailblazer swap.
.
The G-raf has been named by the supremely talented Melanie Horsnell who, when she’s not coming up with cool names, is an indie/folk vocal and guitar artist. If you haven’t heard her stuff go over there and listen, it’s gorgeous. (She’s also the voice behind those huggies pull-at-your-heartstrings, ads). She commented that Mix Tape Molly was “very groovy, he’s a hip hop g-raf for sure..”
So g-raf it is. Thanks Mel!
A Wintry Weekend
June 9, 2009
We spent the weekend with family in Woodend, Victoria…. brrr… it’s cold down there! Not your snowing kinda cold. More a grey drizzly cold. Perfect for stitching beside the fire. Nothing completed but lots of progress on little owls and the third sock dog. I’ve almost finished the owl and sock dog patterns and have the giraffe well under way too.
I’m loving the Woolly Woof Woofs at the moment. Using woollen socks makes the toys even more cuddly and the thicker the sock the more they hold their shape. Seems the perfect crafting for a cold day.
Meet Mix Tape Molly – the sock giraffe
May 31, 2009
I’ve been slowly chipping away at finishing Mix Tape Molly over the past couple of weeks. One of the big things to get right was her main. I tried a couple of hot pink organza pieces of ribbon but in the end settled on the yellow – I wanted to break up the pink and my current colour obsession is yellow for some reason. I’m really quite happy with the way she turned out although my hubby did comment that Giraffe’s mains don’t go all the way down their backs – of course only after I’d painstakingly stitched and double stitched the entire thing. So she’s staying part giraffe part dragon.
The finished Owl Mobile
May 10, 2009
Well here it is. I’ve loved every minute of making this mobile. Other than that I’ll shut up and let the photos do the talking.
Update: The pattern for the owl mobile is now available in the Craft Schmaft store
