The Shaggy Blue Sock Dog
April 11, 2009
I’ve been meaning to make Oscar a sock dog for ages. Yesterday he spent 10 minutes talking to a puppy in the park so I thought it was about time I finished the blue shaggy pup. The shaggy bed socks I used are great – I’ve found the more texture in a sock the more forgiving of little bumps it is. With this one I wanted to try using fabric and a sock so I put some funky monkeys on the inside of his ears which has come up really well. This opens up a whole world of sock/fabric colour co-ordinating. The other thing that worked well is having bigger ears (which the fabric allows). I would have loved to put buttons in for eyes but sadly they’re still a choking hazard. Still the little embroidered ones came up nicely too.
So all in all this sock dog pattern is coming along nicely! Next step is to try it out on non-shaggy socks and see if the result is as good.

Hi, I stumbled across your sock dog on the web and adore it. I would love to make one for my wee boy but can’t find any patterns or information in New Zealand on how to make one as cute as yours. Did you buy a pattern somewhere?

I made the pattern up actually ( I have a slight sock toy obsession, can you tell?) I’ve had so many requests that I’m considering putting a few patterns up for sale somewhere like etsy. If I put the sock dock instructions together would you like to test it for me? It would be great to have feedback before sending it out for general release.

Hi – I would love to test it. I have only made teddy bears in the past – but I see they are out of fashion now. Time for me to get up to speed with the latest creations.

Fantastic, give me a week or two and I’ll get it across to you Sarah!
