A while back on crafty pod there was a post lamenting the loss of exuberance and carefree experimentation in a crafting, a world where simplicity has become king. She wonders has crafting become a little bit too safe? I wrote that it was a shame that there was such an obsession with minimalism.

I’ve spent the last 7 years in digital advertising where simplicity is everything. I find crafting a nice hands on break from having to be clear, clever and concise all the time. Yet I find myself drawn to simplicity in craft imagery.

Why? What is it about clean lines and minimalism that draws us in? Why aren’t we interested in the tiny details of lace and macrame any more?

I’ve been pondering the answer this morning. There’s so much going on in this world, so many advertising messages… billboards, metrolites, websites, sides of buses, train stations, newspapers, television. Our vision is jammed full of marketing. There’s no blank space left.

So when we choose to look at something in a photograph we crave simplicity. We’re inspired by it. Creative minimalism has become a safe haven from the clutter.

Calm. Quiet. Peace. Pleasure. Beauty.

We simply don’t have time or space for complexity any more.

*sigh* a bit deep for a Wednesday morning but I just had to get it out of my system.
